Green IT

The paper “Green IT: keeping it simple” begins with a questionnaire to a reader by Michelle Hazelton what a Green IT is about? The research of green IT for Ethical Property Company approached to the positive changes that can be made with less cost and effort, leads to an auditing of company’s IT equipment and energy consumption sectors. The objective was to find out the time periods when energy consumption was highest along with its consumption power. The research criteria revealed that 60 per cent of the building's energy is consumed when the building is mostly unoccupied even though a PC and monitor that have been switched off still draw on average 20 watts of power which resultants to the wastage of energy. The solution to be carried out is to switch off the equipments at the plug.

Now, getting into WEEE directive, energy efficiency and IEEE standards, it was of quite interesting part exploring new things. While using Energy Calculator for PC Equipments, I found there were three options (PC, Monitor, and Use) that could be selected as per our choice and after pressing Calculate automatically it generates the Total costs split-up and Energy split-up. Glancing to IEEE standards evaluation, EPEAT was being introduced an environmental rating that helps identify greener computers and other electronic equipment. EPEAT is a chance to showcase and validate greener designs and cleaner production with powerful tools for enhancing the sustainability performance of virtually any organization.
